- One of the most ancient and valued Bulgarian varieties, Mavrud is a symbol of tradition and craftsmanship in winemaking. The legend of Mavrud According to one of the most famous legends, Mavrud is linked to the Bulgarian Khan Krum (803-814). During his reign, the khan issued an order to destroy all vineyards to prevent the abuse of wine among the soldiers and the people.Only one woman disobeyed the order and hid the vine she later planted. Years later her son, a young and strong warrior named Mavrud, saved the inn in battle. Impressed by his strength and courage, Khan Krum asked his mother how she had raised such a son. She replied that Mavrud had been brought up with the wine from the vine she had secretly kept. The khan, impressed by the story, rescinded his order and named the variety after the young hero.
